Govind Dev Ji Jaipur temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna. Built in 1735 by Maharaj Sawai Pratap Singh, the main idol faced the window of the king’s bedroom in his palace. His day would begin with a “darshan” (sacred viewing) of his beloved deity.
Today, the temple affords unobstructed view of the idols to the thousands of devotees who gather for prayers. This means there are no pillars in between. The construction was an architectural challenge.
The feat earned this temple a name in the Guinness Book of World Records “for having the widest single span RCC flat roof”.
Back in the 18th century, the royal family got some highly decorative bejeweled costumes designed for the idols. There are five of these special costumes, each one costs a whopping Rs. 25 lac (42K USD). On auspicious occasions like Diwali, the idols are dressed in this glittering extravaganza.
Clearly, the temple and it’s legend is something the people of Jaipur held in high regard.
Through the devotees, we got to see the cross section of social life in Jaipur: traditional old families with the “purdah” clad women, to young modern families.
One tiny old lady particularly caught our attention. Clearly this was a special outing for her. She had come all decked up; her heavily sequenced finery literally weighing down her frail frame. She and her husband seemed to be having a good time. We saw them laughing and joking around. When she couldn’t see the idols from her seat, her husband helped stand up. Oblivious to the crowds around, they were just happy to be where they were!
About Govind Dev Ji Jaipur
It is a popular saying in Jaipur that the idol of Lord Shri Krishna transferred from Vrindavan Dhaam to Pink City Jaipur and consecrated at Suraj Mahal of City Palace during the reign of Aurangzeb. As the religious fanaticism was on peak during Aurangzeb, it was a major issue to protect the temples and idols of Hindu religion. At that time, the then caretaker of Govind Dev ji Temple of Vrindavan Dhaam shifted the idol of Lord Shri Krishna (Govind Dev ji) to Jaipur. In year 1735, the holy idol of Shri Lord Krishna consecrated at the present place of temple (Suraj Mahal of City Palace).

Festivals and Fairs at Govind Dev Ji Mandir Jaipur
Holi is festival celebrated grandly in Govind Dev ji Temple of Jaipur. Faag, Raas and special Jhanki start from 1 month before Holi festival.
Janamashtami, the birth anniversary of Lord Shri Krishna celebrated at very large scale in the temple. It comes on Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksh of Bhadrapad month as per Hindu calendar, which is approximately mid of August.
