Rajasthan is a state that reflects the colorful side of our country best during fairs and festivals. There are many fairs throughout the year, which brighten the lives of the villagers of the desert state. One of the most popular and colorful fairs of the Thar desert is the Pushkar fair, which begins on Kartik Shukla Ekadashi & goes on for five days till Kartik Purnima according to the Hindu calender. The fair takes place during the months of October-November according to the position of the moon. The lake at Pushkar is one of the most sacred in India. As per the tradition of more than 100 years, people have been gathering here annually during the month of Kartik to worship Lord Brahma.
Pushkar festival is an annual fest that sets on the occasion of the Hindu festival. It is one of the largest livestock and camel fairs in the country. People from all around the country and world come to witness such a spectacle every year.
The Fair has two components – camel trading and religious rituals. People pay homage to Lord Brahma by immersing in the holy water of Pushkar lake. The camel trading is the main attraction of the fest, which attracts the tourists as well.
This year the Dates of Pushkar Fair are 23rd October to 4thh November, 2017
Schedule of Pushkar Mela 2017:
October 23, 2017 : The traders and herders along with camels start gathering and setting up camps.
October 24-27, 2017 : The arrivals continue and the gathering grows at the sand dunes. The trading commences with photography sessions of the most colourful environment.
October 28, 2017 : Program of camel races, camel and cow beauty contests, camel safaris and other activities begin at the fairground.
October 29, 2017 : The fair brightens up the sand dunes with art twist of authentic music, gypsies and tourists. Camels and traders start their journey back into the desert as their business concludes.
October 30-November 1, 2017 : The temples and market area near the lake flairs up as pilgrims start arriving for the religious part of the fair. Official events for tourists continue at the stadium with fun rides, folk dances, music performances, food and entertainment stalls.
November 2-3, 2017 : The town is busy with pilgrimage rituals. Bhajans (devotional hymns) and religious ceremonies take place at the temples. The most important temple, which is the center of celebrations, is dedicated to Lord Brahma.
November 4, 2017 (Kartik Punima) : This is the holy full moon night when thousands of pilgrims gather to bathe in the lake to wash away their sins. The festival concludes with a maha aarti (worship with fire) by the lake and fireworks display.
