Opened on 1st June 1976 with the film “Charas”, Raj Mandir is the best-known cinema constructed in India. Holding the royalty of 25 years of history, it is considered as Asia’s one of the largest theatre halls. Shri Hari Dev Joshi, the chief minister of Rajasthan, inaugurated this grand movie hall at that time.
Raj Mandir was more of a dream project as, in 1966, Shri Mohanlal Sukhadia, one of the former chief ministers of Rajasthan laid the foundation stone with an initiative to build a captivating entertainment spot which can be an ideal example of modern and stylish Jaipur. Then, under the supervision of Shri Mehtab Chandra, the project was guided and supervised with his creativity to lead a development of the stunning place. It is also one of the tourist trails for visitors in Jaipur. Identical to the Grauman’s Chinese Movie Theatre in Hollywood, California, it certainly lives up to its image as one of the most remarkable cinemas in India.
Look at the Architecture of Raj Mandir Cinema
This opulent cinema appears like a huge strawberry cake, with a meringue auditorium and a portico somewhere between a temple and Disneyland. It took round about ten years to construct this massive entertainment spot. Architect W.M. Namjoshi designed Raj Mandir in a spectacular modern art style. It’s prodigious look, and elegant style imparts a glimpse of the fusion of swish and modern architecture. The place leaves everyone charmed with the exterior of the building consist of various asymmetrical shapes, Zigzags, Curves, and stars set into the façade. The cinema hall name is located on top of the building in large neon letters and boasts the legendary line “The Showplace of the Nation – Experience the Excellence.”
In the inner part of the theatre, while witnessing extravagantly finished roof, you might get driven back to time. It resembles more like a royal palace with large chandeliers set into the domes in the ceiling. A large ramp rather than stairs that take patrons up in the balcony area and the decoration inside is mesmerising.

Raj Mandir is equipped to screen 70mm movies with the seating capacity of nearly 1300 people, which make it enlisted in one of the biggest halls in India. Serving categories of Pearl, Ruby, Emerald, and Diamond, it has the booking system that can be made in advance. The main hall is decorated with velvet-draped curtains, and it still has that old culture of raising purdah before beginning the film.
